Product Comparison: Mint Glitter Polishes [Deborah Lippman vs. Revlon]

With summer kicking off and all of the traveling I’ve been doing recently, I thought I’d share my perfect summer polish to wear on my nails. I wanted something fun, but also long lasting. The particular shade I picked was my obviously favorite mint green but filled with flecks of glitter, as the texture and formula of the particles is much less prone to chipping. I found this Deborah Lippman shade in Mermaid’s Dream about a year ago and have just been able to bring it back out again. I was looking through my sister’s collection recently though and found this Revlon Parfumerie polish in Wintermint and realized how similarly they looked. So, I figured this would be as good of a time if any to write up a quickie comparison on them, as it’s been awhile since I’ve done a post in this category. Here’s my thoughts:

Deborah Lipmann “Mermaid’s Dream”

• Color: The color is perfectly described in the name. This shade is a light blue-green shade, leaning more towards blue. There are large blue flecks of glitter, and finer fillers of micro gold glitter. There is a metallic sheen but it’s not quite a duochrome effect. It is very dimensional from the unique glitter pairings, and unlike anything else in my collection.5/5
• Color Payoff: The color is extremely opaque and covers the nail easily in two coats, but you can even get away with one if you are in a hurry. 5/5
• Formula: The formula is a chunky metallic nail paint. It’s not very runny, but also not overly thick. 4/5
• Application: Due to the chunky nature, it is not very runny but it still glides on well. The glitter is evenly distributed enough that there are no obvious bumps or lumps. When it dries, there is a definite texture and the nail is not smooth. It dries fast and does not smudge easily. 4/5
• Longevity: I can go about 5-7 days before any obvious chips. You have to make sure that the edges are pretty clean though because if there is some paint on the end of you finger nail, the texture can snag against some materials. 4/5

Pros:

• A unique color to add to your collection, and a fun shade to wear for summer.
• Includes treatments in the formula such as biotin, green tea extract, and aucoumea.
• Is free of formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBP, (dibutyl phthlate) and camphor.
• Paraben and sulfate free.
• Not tested on animals.

Cons:

• Is in the mid to high price range for a nail polish at $20 for .5 fl oz

Revlon Perfumarie “Wintermint”

• Color: Similarly, this is a minty color but it leans warmer with more yellow tones. I’d actually classify it as a seafoam. It’s definitely less vibrant and bright than the Deborah Lippman as well. It has large blue glitter flecks and smaller gold microglitters as well, but it is less distributed. 4/5
• Color Payoff: You need a good 2-3 coats to get this to be opaque, but even then it is a bit thin. 4/5
• Formula: The formula is much thinner and more like a traditional liquid paint. It does not have much of an obvious texture like the DL and can be easier to wear because of that. 4.5/5
• Application: It applies smoother than the DL, but it definitely is thinner and liquidier, making it necessary for more layers. It’s not as easy just to swipe and be done; you definitely need to focus a little. It dries slower than the DL and combined with the more liquid texture, makes it more prone ot smudging. 3.5/5
• Longevity: Since there is less glitter and it is smoother it lasts a little less longer, maybe 4-5 days. 4/5

Pros:

• An easily accessible and affordable option at the drugstore.
• It is also a unique color if you don’t have it in your collection already.
• Since this is from their Perfumerie line, this polish smells like mint… so good!

Cons:

• If you don’t want a scented polish, this won’t be for you although it only lasts for a few hours, maybe up to a day.
• The formula isn’t necessarily ingredient choice conscious.
• Not cruelty free or vegan.

Conclusion:

As with anything, I think this comes down to preference and what you are looking for. If you want something cheap, fast, and fun the Revlon will do, but it you are trying to make conscious choices or want to treat yo’ self, I say the Deborah Lippman is worth it. I prefer the Deborah, just because the color looks a bit brighter and I feel compliments my skin tone better. Also, I appreciate that it is very ingredient conscious, meaning it has plenty of ingredients that treat your nails and is free of those that are damaging to you. In conclusion, I think that these two polishes are definitely comparable, but not exact dupes for one another and it is up to you to decide which will work for your needs.
