Tutorial: Drugstore Drama

Hello, hello! Welcome back to the blog. It’s gotten a bit of a facelift since last week, so I hope you like it! I’m still working on a few things, but so far I’m enjoying the way it’s turned out. Anyhow, this week I wanted to bring you a special tutorial; one that I’ve never done before. For this post, I put together a dramatic smokey eye and bold lip look using completely drugstore items, right down to even the brushes. In doing so, I’m hoping to prove that you can still create beautiful makeup with inexpensive products. So, let’s get started!

1. To prime the face, I’m using the Nivea Men Post Shave Balm. This contains glycerin, a prominent ingredient in face primer formulas. I’m rubbing this in until it gets tacky to create a base for the foundation to adhere to.
2. For foundation I’m using the new L’Oreal Lumi Cushion Compact and applying it with a Real Techniques Complexion Sponge. I find that using a beauty sponge gives a much smoother application than the little puff that comes with the compact. Surprisingly, the coverage is beautiful medium that gives a natural look to the skin. I recently used this in the tutorial over on myvioletdelights, so if you already haven’t be sure to check it out!
3. Since this is not a full coverage foundation, I’m spot concealing with the Maybelline Fit Me concealer and blending it in with the same sponge.
4. To create a base for the eyes I’m using one of my favorites, the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Barely Branded and gently patting it over the lid with my clean finger. To set it in place, I just ran a bit of nude shadow over the lid. 
5. I’m taking this warm medium brown shade from the Wet n Wild Downtown Browns palette on the blending brush end from this EcoTools Eye Enhancing Duo Set. I ran this from the corner of the eye up into the crease to create a wing shape.
6. To add some more definition, I used the Morphe M222 pencil brush (I know it’s not technically a drugstore tool, but it is very affordable!) and this smokey taupe color (it looks lighter than it wears) to add darkness to the outer corner.
7. To highlight the inner corner I’m using the Real Techniques Detail Brush and a bit of this champagne color.
8. To prep the lashes for falsies, I’m applying one coat of the Covergirl Lash Blast mascara.
9. I’m smoking out the lower lashline, starting with the NYC Cityproof 24 HR Waterproof Eyeliner in brown and applying it to the waterline. Surprisingly, this formula was super smooth and glided on like a dream!*
10. Using the smudger end from the EcoTools duo, I’m smoking out the liner using the violet eyelid shade and running it back and forth over the liner. 
11. For lashes I’m using the Kiss True Volume lashes in the style Posh with the Kiss Black Strip Lash Adhesive with Aloe. These fluttery little beauties have tapered ends on each hair to give a more natural look!* I also went back over the band with the NYC eyeliner to keep it concealed.
12. For brows, I’m filling them in using the NYX Micro Brow pencil. Full review here.
13. To clean everything up, I’m taking the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer under the eyes and around the brows. I’m using it to sharpen the wings of the eye makeup, the tail of the brow, and highlight under the eyes. I’m blending it out with the Morphe Detail Contour E45.
14. For contour, I’m using the NYX Wonder Stick to draw in the cream definition and then blending it out with the same sponge.
15. To set the cream contour in place, I’m using the bronzer from this Elf Contouring Blush & Bronzing Powder and the Real Techniques contour brush.
16. With the Morphe E3 I’m applying this NYX in Peach to the apples of the cheeks. 
17. For luminizer, I’m applying this this NYX Illuminator with the REal Techniques setting brush to the high points of the face.
18. For lips, I’m going with a bold berry. This is the Covergirl lipstick in Number 40.
19. To set the face, I’m using this new Maybelline Master Fix translucent loose powder with the EcoTools Stippling brush.
20. To finish everything off, I’m spraying this new Maybelline Master Fix Mist.
